Lisa Erickson - January Reflection

I'll admit - I left Atlanta feeling refreshed and with some renewed energy to tackle this project, but then I got off the plane and daily work-life jumped right down my throat, burying that enthusiasm.

But as I read through this online community and others' posts, I once again found my focus and cleared my thoughts on how to make this all happen.  I got out my notes and re-read some of the hand-outs.  I then got out my date book and scheduled some time each week to work specifically on this project.  I know myself too well -- I need to have it written down in my planner, or it's just going to get pushed back as other 'fires' become a priority.

While I will certainly take what I learned and apply it professionally, I will also admit that most of what I learned I framed in the reference of what I am seeing happening in my own home.  My son will be 9 in just a few short months and I can see in him many of the things that were talked about by the speakers.  He is suddenly aware of the world around him and how he fits into that world.  He cares about others, but also is still very self-focused.  It's a fine balancing act.  The speakers helped me to remember what it was like to be his age.   It also helped me to remember that while my children have a stable home, this is not always the case.   This revelation has carried over to library-land too and I will certainly keep these things in mind as we not only plan programming, but also look at things like patron policies.  Patience and understanding go a long way in helping to build successful communities.
