May Action Plan

Renae Rountree July 11, 2017

Five days after I posted all of my April work, my mom fell. One emergency back surgery later, my mom is doing great. I am slowly working my way out of the hole of taking so much time off work during our busiest time of year. Here is my May Action Plan:

1. Who?- My partner is the AVID program at Roulhac Middle School. The point of contact is Jiranda White, one of the AVID counselors and an 8th grade teacher. There are multiple people that I could have partnered with for this project that came out of the woodwork as I started investigating the opportunities that could be had concerning college and career readiness. The reason I chose the AVID program is that they are already doing it and I want to help them do it better if possible.

2. When?- Work on my part is going to be most of this summer but we will launch in the fall because it will be the beginning of the new school year and a great chance to promote something to a completely different group of kids that will be transitioning to middle school.

3. Where?- There will be several locations that will be utilized within the project. During our speaker series, Roulhac Middle School is the obvious locations since kids will be in school at the time and we can't interrupt regular class. As we transition, I hope that there will be several business locations that will be available for students to go to to learn about what happens in the day to day. Finally, during the summer of 2018, I hope that the Chipley Library will be a congregation point for the students who are in AVID and participating in the shadowing part of the project, as they may need a place to check in and ask questions while school is out.

4. What?- The program really has 3 steps that build on each other. Once one step is complete, then another step can be done, and finally the 3rd step, which ends the project for the student or starts the process all over again depending on what grade the student is currently enrolled. The first step is listening to the business speakers, the second is visiting or touring a business, and the final step is shadowing a professional of a business for part of the summer.

5. Why?- 1. 75 % of the students attending the 6 monthly local business guest speaker talks during the 2017-2018 school year will be able to list 3 services or key activities that the business engages in on a regular basis. 2. Of the 15 businesses approached as a partner for shadowing opportunities, 40% will become partners for summer 2018. 3. 30% of students in the Roulhac Middle School AVID program will participate in the 2018 summer shadowing project. These 3 goals haven't changed much from my original plan. I expect some tweaking to them as the new school year approaches.

6. How?- Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork (aka document, document, document)! I will use signup sheets, emails or letters of commitment, pre- and post- surveys as appropriate.
