Teen Summer Reading: Bullet Journals for Mental Health

Crystal Laiben July 31, 2018

Thanks to the YALSA/Dollar General Grant, we were able to provide a bullet journal and a copy of Michelle Falkoff's Playlist for the Dead to each teen participating in summer reading. I also used the grant to purchase art supplies that are commonly used in bullet journalling - stencils, sharpie pens, markers, water color pens, paints, and brushes. These are supplies we shared during the programs as students learned to use their journals for self-care and to track their mental health. We held weekly programs for 8 weeks that included topics such as: basic bullet journalling, bullet journals for self-care, bullet journals for mental health, book discussion & journalling, music journalling, empathy training, and self-care & mental health resources.  For our final program, we created a pamphlet of fiction book suggestions for teens and displayed them along with books from our catalog. We also created a give and take display board with random acts of kindness suggestions and inspirational quotes.

Learning outcomes

Participants learned how to manage their mental health through the use of a bullet journal. They also learned basic self-care tips. Participants learned and practiced empathy through role-playing activities and reading Playlist for the Dead by Michelle Falkoff. They learned that they are not alone in their struggles with mental health and that each person has some shared experiences with their peers.

Instructions

Most bullet journal tips and examples came from Pinterest. A particular blog on PrettyPrintsandPaper.com by Lili from @rainbowbulletjournal on Instagram was very helpful, as well.

Evaluation

Evaluation of the programs were overall positive. Teens kept coming back each week and parents expressed gratitude for the tools their children were receiving.
