NaNoWriMo: Game Of Thrones

Dawn Abron October 10, 2018

Fantasy worlds are popular, think Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. This activity will get teens thinking about the fantasy world they are writing.  This activity is appropriate for middle thru high school and can be done one time or over a period of time.

Type: Active
Age: Middle school
Optimal size: 11-20
Estimated cost: Free
Planning time: <1 hour
Frequency: One-time

Learning outcomes

At the end of the program, teens will...

  • Become familiar with cartography
  • Create original work or responsibly remix existing content to make something new
  • Engage in personal expression
  • Create content to demonstrate meaning

Instructions

  • Upon Arrival: Give worksheet and pebbles.
    • Drop the rocks on the front of the worksheet.
    • Move the rocks around to form land masses.
    • Draw around the pebbles to create land masses.
    • Use the legend to complete the map
    • Fill out worksheet (This is an outline)
    • Give teens pencil and paper or a Chromebook to begin their story if there’s time.

Evaluation

  • Have examples of popular worlds/maps for reference.
  • Although making the map is the fun part, have teens outline their world first to help them create their map.
  • It was difficult to complete within a two hour time period.  It takes time to fill out the outline and draw and create the map.
  • I'd recommend including this activity within your reoccurring creating writing group.
  • The pebble activity is great because it forces teens to create the map they are given. Creating a map from scratch can be overwhelming.
